New work, new direction, May 2015

After sitting on these mostly-finished works for weeks, I hemmed and hawed and finally decided to let some of the issues go. They're so radically different that I had a hard time resolving the compositions. I can't tell if they're done or not, but I do know I need to move on.

I'm playing with the concept of surface now. I'm fairly confident with both composition and color, but my surfaces are not typically that intriguing. I'm trying to refine my sense of value too, really get back to the basics, but that may prove to be too much to digest right now.

If that didn't make sense to you, that's barely made sense to me, and I'm a Professional Artist (I will repeat that until it's true). I may even sell a painting TONIGHT. That would be encouraging.

By the way, the two works titled Sangre Arroyo are much more narrative than I'm letting on. At some point I hope to pull together an artist's statement that can do more than just allude to depth and substance. In the meantime, enjoy the pretty pictures.
